Well, my husband's parents purchased the property when my husband was just 3 years old. As a child, he spent most of his summers on the property. When we started dating seriously, he brought me along. I fell in love with our piece of heaven.

Once Kiersten and Max were big enough, we would send them to Grandma and Grandpa for a couple of weeks during summer break. We are lucky that Marcus (Kiersten’s husband) and Lisl (Max’s girlfriend) both love the property as well. Max’s college buddies and Marcus and Kiersten’s friends have been coming to visit and work for the last several years. My family has enjoyed several vacations with us.

Everyone comes to help with projects and play. Our little piece of heaven has become quite the family vacation property. With the addition of solar power and Starlink, remote work becomes possible, extending the time friends and family can hang out.

As more friends and family come to enjoy our property, further upgrades are required. So we’re adding on to the guest cabin, putting in a water well, and adding more solar.

We sold our house in Illinois and are now at our property in Montana. What a huge change after living in our home for 20 years! We downsized, in a way, from a 1,700-square-foot house on a quarter-acre lot to a two-bedroom, one-bath cabin on 18.8 acres. The property also includes a one-room guest cabin, a small bathhouse, a block building, a “giraffe barn,” a powerhouse, and several small outbuildings. I’m starting to think we're a bit overambitious.

Our tasks for this summer include finishing the enclosure of the addition we’ve started on the guest cabin before winter arrives. A well driller is currently on the property installing a water well, so eventually, we’ll have water available in the winter.

I don’t want you to think we’re on this adventure alone. We are not alone in the work we do around the property. Our daughter Kiersten, son-in-law Marcus, son Max, and lots of friends help.
